Well, if you've read
dadaginny's LJ you know that she's back safe and sound from her weekend trip down to Louisiana.
She had lots of fun and saw things she's never seen before.
Friday was the trip to Avery Island. This is where they make the famous Tabasco pepper sauce. We almost thought we were lost while driving down the highway, but as soon as both of us mentioned it, we saw the sign pointing to where we needed to go. I haven't been to Avery Island since I was VERY young.
Once you enter the factory, you are greeted with the smell of Tabasco. The tour of the factor is small, but the other highlight is the Jungle Gardens tour. It's an area of land that has been preserved by the McIlhinny family. Ginny got some pictures of small gators. When I told her that they were just "teenagers" she was surprised to learn that they do get rather large and the ones we saw sunbathing were still "infants." lol.
Saturday was a tour of Magnolia Mound. It's one of the few plantations that is not privately owned and you can tour the entire grounds. Most plantations are owned by private citizens and are either bed and breakfasts or they limit to where you can go. I've lived in Baton Rouge for most of my life and I've never done the tour of Magnolia Mound before.
We did lunch at French Market Bistro which is where my brother works. He was there that day and treated us to lunch. Really cool. Dinner was at a place called Boutin's. I've eaten there before a few times, but Ginny wanted some Louisiana food. Boutin's is the real deal. Quite good food.
Sunday was New Orleans and what we thought would be Jazz Fest. It was also a day in which I caught a cold. I saw sick the entire day. First, we went to Cafe Du Monde since Ginny just loves coffee. I don't drink it, but their hot chocolate is always good as are the beignets. Second stop was Pat O'Briens. We both indulged in a hurricane and Ginny got to keep her glass. I got another glass since the one I got last year seems to have been misplaced.
Ginny also did some souvenir shopping, but we were starting to get pressed for time and needed to head to the fairgrounds for Jazz Fest.
Sadly, we never did Jazz Fest. I wanted to see Steely Dan and she wanted to see Harry Connick, Jr. We drove around for quite a long time looking for just a parking space. The signs were a tad misleading and there were no places within miles of the fairgrounds. When I saw were back near the Superdome (and also near the French Quarter), it was time to give up and drive back home. I felt really bad about her not seeing Harry, but she'll see him live one day.
Ginny also introduced me to the Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV series. I like what I see so far.
Anyways, she seemed to have had a good time and I'm glad she did. She went back with since souvenirs and also some Community Coffee which I insisted she take back with her. :-P

Date: 2007-05-17 09:31 pm (UTC)I have little or no fascination with New Orleans. I guess since I grew up in Louisiana it's just one of those places where I'm like "eh."
When friends come to visit they usually ask "How far is New Orleans from your house?" My first thought is to say "Awhile." but I have to remember that they've never been and it will be a new experience for them.
Sadly, I'm not the best tour guide. I just bring them to the French Quarter and let them experience that part. I've never done graveyard tours or anything like that myself.
I guess I'm just used to the debauchery that the city provides on a regular basis. :-P
Still, Ginny had a blast and that's all that mattered to me.
